Immigration New Zealand is introducing a new Short-term Graduate Work Visa and extending Post Study Work Visa eligibility to better align graduate pathways with New Zealand's skills needs.
These changes will be launched from Monday 16 November 2026, including the introduction of the Short-term Graduate Work Visa and updates to Post Study Work Visa eligibility.
The Short-term Graduate Work Visa provides 6 months of open work rights, allowing time to look for work and, where appropriate, transition to an Accredited Employer Work Visa.
The Post Study Work Visa eligibility extension will include graduates who have completed a graduate diploma at NZQCF Level 7, studied full-time in New Zealand for the full duration of the qualification, and hold a bachelor's degree.
Applicants will need to provide evidence including a copy of their bachelor's degree certificate (showing qualification type and awarding institution) and an official academic transcript.
Anyone who has previously been granted a Post Study Work Visa is not eligible for a second Post Study Work Visa or a Short-term Graduate Work Visa.
Together, these changes aim to attract and retain international graduates with valuable skills while maintaining education quality and protecting New Zealand's international reputation.
